What is it?
A donor's kidney is placed into a patient with kidney failure. This is a treatment method; follow-up care and the need for medicines do not go away.
How does the evaluation work?
The transplant team assesses the patient's general health and the condition of the heart and other organs. Tests for compatibility with the donor are also needed. Being related does not by itself guarantee a match.
What happens next?
The work of the new kidney is monitored with tests. Medicines that reduce the immune system's response against the transplanted organ are taken in the way the doctor prescribes. Rejection can sometimes begin without any symptoms.
Ask at your appointment
What are the benefits and risks of transplantation and other treatments for me? Which tests are needed? Which center will provide follow-up care?
