Main organs transplanted worldwide
In modern medicine worldwide, transplants of the following organs are done regularly: kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, and small intestine.
Tissue and cell transplantation
Besides organs, transplantation of tissues is also widespread: the cornea of the eye, bone marrow (hematopoietic stem cells), skin tissue (for burns), blood vessels, and bone and tendon tissues.
Global figures (WHO / GODT)
The Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT), run together with the World Health Organization, publishes transplant data from around the world every year. It records hundreds of thousands of organ transplants a year, and most of them are kidney transplants. For the current exact figures, open the GODT source. Donation can come from a living donor (mostly a kidney or part of a liver) or from a deceased donor (after brain death has been declared).
